Advancing the Security Profession across the Australian Capital Territory Region

The ASIS International Australian Capital Territory (ACT) Chapter is dedicated to advancing the security profession across the ACT region. We work closely with our regional and international chapters to extend the reach, value, and impact of our efforts. We foster collaboration across borders, for the benefit of our chapter members.  We connect back to a global network of security professionals, while keeping our focus on the unique security challenges faced within the ACT.

Our Mission

Our mission is to support and promote the security profession through networking, education, and advocacy.

We strive to create a community that not only connects security professionals, but also empowers them in and increasingly complex and rapidly evolving security environment.

We provide our members with access to a network of industry peers across various sectors, fostering relationships that encourage collaboration and the exchange of ideas. Our chapter is a hub for professional growth, offering educational resources that span from seminars and workshops to cutting-edge training programs. These initiatives ensure that our members remain informed about the latest security trends, technologies, and best practices.

Through our advocacy efforts, we work to elevate the profile of the security profession in the ACT and beyond. We engage with local and national security policymakers and institutions to ensure that the importance of the security sector is recognised and supported. By representing the interests of security professionals, we help shape the future of the industry and influence the development of policies and standards that impact the profession.

Our commitment to ongoing professional development also extends to members seeking and maintaining ASIS certification. By providing opportunities that count towards Continuing Professional Development (CPD), we ensure that our certified members can maintain their credentials and continue to advance in their careers.

Our Focus

Our focus is on addressing the unique needs of security professionals working in the ACT.

We are positioned at the heart of Australian government, defence, and national security, and the ACT plays a critical role in shaping and administering many of Australia’s security policies and regulations.

The ACT is home to numerous national security agencies, government departments, nationally significant institutions, and critical infrastructure, all of which face some of Australia’s most pressing security challenges. This includes protecting and safeguarding highly sensitive information and assets, high-profile individuals and institutions, while preserving important socio-cultural values.

We recognise the vital role that security professionals play in addressing these challenges, and we support them in building the knowledge and skills required to respond effectively. Any security professional, regardless of their specific field, can gain valuable insights and benefit from being part of our community and the ASIS International network.

Our Membership

Our membership is diverse, encompassing professionals from a broad spectrum of sectors and job roles.

Our members work across government, law enforcement, defence, intelligence, and critical infrastructure, as well as consulting firms, security services and security solutions providers. We have members from various backgrounds, including security management, architecture, construction, installation and systems integration, and academia. We are security managers, risk analysts, consultants, engineers, architects, project managers, systems installers, and researchers.

We welcome anyone with an interest in security and extend equal opportunity for anyone to engage with and contribute to our vibrant security community.

Our Activities

We hold a range of activities throughout the year for the benefit of our members.

Networking Opportunities
We hold regular in-person events that connect security professionals from various sectors, providing a valuable platform to foster relationships, share experiences, and explore emerging ideas and innovations. These gatherings, including regular chapter meetings and meet-ups, are mostly informal and encourage open, free-flowing conversations. Whether you’re a seasoned professional or new to the field, we invite you to come along, meet us, and share your unique experiences and perspectives. We offer an accessible way to expand your professional network and stay connected with the latest developments in the security industry.

Seminars and Webinars
Our regular seminars and webinars feature leading experts and security professionals from around the world, sharing their insights on the latest security trends, technologies, and challenges. These sessions are designed to keep members informed on global developments and local impacts, covering topics such as cyber security, physical security, and the evolving threat landscape. Whether you attend in-person or online, our events provide opportunities to learn from industry peers and to expand your professional knowledge.

Workshops
Our workshops provide members with hands-on opportunities to explore and engage with new or interesting security technologies and approaches.  Participants can deepen their understanding and see how they are practically applied. These sessions are designed to not only build technical skills but also to encourage collaboration and knowledge exchange among peers.

Interactive Experiences
We also organise interactive experiences, including site visits to high-security environments and critical infrastructure facilities. These visits offer unique insights into the practical application of security in real-world settings, allowing members to see first-hand how security is implemented in a variety of environments and contexts. These experiences provide a rare opportunity to understand the broader challenges, novel solutions, and to learn from security professionals on the ground.

Continuing Professional Development
For our ASIS Certified members, many of our events—including seminars, webinars, workshops, and interactive experiences—are designed to count towards your Continuing Professional Development (CPD) requirements. By participating in these activities, you can earn credits while staying up to date and connected with our community.
